Recommended kite sizes for Kalpitiya Lagoon

Kalpitya lagoon offers two seasons for kitesurfing. The winds are stronger during their summer season ranging from 20 knots to 30 knots, neighbouring islands of Vella, mini-Vella, and dream spot provides 3 to 5 knots more than Kapitya Lagoon. On Vella Island, you might need a 7-meter kite if you weigh around 40 kilos.

  • 50 to 60 kilos – 7 meters to 9 meters
  • 70 to 80 kilos – 9 meters to 12 meters
  • 90 to 100 kilos – 10 meters to 13 meters

The winter season ranges from December to March, and the wind speed is around 18 to 24 knots, this season offers consistent wind and below kite sizes are recommended.

  • 50 to 60 kilos – 8 meters to 10 meters
  • 70 to 80 kilos – 10 meters to 14 meters
  • 90 to 100 kilos – 12 meters to 16 meters

It is recommended to carry bigger kites during the winter season for some light wind days.
