Kalpitya Lagoon: Kalpitya lagoon is a well-known destination for kitesurfers. This lagoon
offers two seasons for riders. The summer season extends from May to September and the
winter season extends from December to early March. Summer season offers 20 to 30 knots
winds on a regular basis and the best months to be here are June, July, and August. The
water is flat throughout the year and it’s a great place for beginners to start their kitesurfing
journey.
Kudawa Beach: Kudawa beach is an epicenter of water sports. Travelers can find many
options like kiteboarding, wing foiling, strapless kitesurfing, and kayaking. The best season
for kitesurfers is May to September (Summer season) and December to March (Winter
Season). Experienced riders can ride from Kudawa beach to Kalpitya lagoon and donkey
point in 5 minutes. Kudawa beach offers kite schools for IKO certification, gear rental, and
stay.
Kappalady Lagoon: Kappalady lagoon is an amazing spot to kite. The best time to be
here extends from May to September. Situated 15 kilometers from Kalpitya lagoon,
travelers- can reach Kappalady in 15 minutes on road. The shallow waters of this lagoon
make it very beginner friendly. This lagoon offers a great time to the advanced riders as
well. Kappalady offers many kite schools, hotels, and restaurants.
Vella Island: Ranked as the best spot in Asia for kitesurfing, Vella Island is truly a
magical place to kite. Consistently offering 5 to 7 knots over Kalpitya lagoon, Vella
islands offers 25 to 35 knots of offshore winds during the summer season. The best time
to be here extends from May to September. Located 25 kilometers from Kalpitya lagoon
and Kudawa beach, riders can reach Vella Island in 45 to 60 minutes in a boat depending
on the water conditions. Riders can opt to stay overnight and enjoy kitesurfing with
barbeque and star gazing. This is spot is used by intermediate and advanced riders,
beginners must learn to ride upwind before they can feel comfortable here.
Mini-Vella (Ippantivu): Similar to Vella Island, Mini-Vella is also known as Ippantivu is
another great spot to kite. The best season is around May to September. Travelers can
reach this island in 30 minutes on a boat from Kalpitya lagoon or Kudawa beach.
Ippantivu delivers 25 to 30 knots of offshore winds in season and experienced riders can
have a blast here. Riders can opt for downwinders from dream spot to lppantivu in the
summer season.
Donkey Point: Donkey point is the only spot around Kalpitya that provides waves. On
an average day, the waves are about 3 to 4 feet in height, and on good days they can be
around 6 to 8 feet high. This is a great spot for wave riding and the riders can use the
waves as kickers to jump high. The best time to be here is around May to September and
the wind speed is usually 2 to 3 knots higher than Kalpitya lagoon.
Dream Spot: Dream spot is situated around 12 kilometers from Kalpitya lagoon, and it
may take around 30 minutes to get there by boat. The spot is known for its flat water and
consistent side offshore wind. Winds ranging from 20 to 25 knots are common during the
summer (May to September). This is a popular spot for downwinders. Riders can plan
downwind trips from the Kalpitya lagoon to the dream spot and further travel to Ippantivu.
The kite school operating in Kalpitya lagoon and Kudawa beach can organize these
downwind trips.
Magic Sand: Magic sand is another kite spot in Kalpitya. Situated 12 kilometers from
Kalpitya lagoon, this spot is famous during the winter season (December to March). It will
take 20 to 25 minutes to reach there in a boat. Offering flat water and consistent wind this
spot is a must-visit if you are here during the winter season.
Baby Lagoon: This is another popular winter spot in Kalpitya. Offering flat water and 18
to 20-knot winds, this lagoon is a winter specialty. Riders can go downwind from Kalpitya
lagoon to baby lagoon.
