There are good kite sessions, there are great ones — and then there is Vella Island. A remote sandbar rising out of the Puttalam Lagoon, surrounded by water so flat it looks like a mirror, Vella Island is the kind of place that makes experienced kiters go quiet for a moment when they first see it. It's that good.
At Surfpoint Sri Lanka Kite Village, the Vella Island trip is one of our most popular excursions — and once you've done it, you'll understand why guests plan their entire return visits around it.
What Is Vella Island?
Vella Island — sometimes called Magic Island by the kiting community — is a small, uninhabited sandbar located in the heart of the Puttalam Lagoon, reachable only by boat from Kalpitiya. There are no roads, no buildings, no crowds. Just white sand, warm turquoise water, and wind.
The island sits in a natural wind corridor that funnels and accelerates the breeze, often producing conditions that are 1 to 3 knots stronger than what you'd find back at the main beach. Combined with the extraordinarily flat, shallow water that surrounds it in every direction, it creates a riding environment that is genuinely difficult to find anywhere else in the world.
The Boat Trip: 45 Minutes of Pure Anticipation
The adventure begins at Surfpoint's beach, where you'll load your gear onto one of our traditional Sri Lankan fishing boats — locally known as oruwa — and head out into the lagoon. The crossing takes approximately 45 minutes, and it is very much part of the experience.
As you leave the peninsula behind, the lagoon opens up around you. The water turns from muddy green to clear turquoise. You'll pass through shallow channels where you can see the sandy bottom just below the surface, and if you're lucky, spot rays gliding silently beneath the boat. The skyline shrinks to just water, sky, and the distant silhouette of Vella Island growing slowly on the horizon.
Pack your sunscreen, a hat, and your camera for this part. The light on the lagoon in the early morning is extraordinary.
Arriving at Vella Island: The First Look
When the boat beaches on the sand and you step out onto Vella Island for the first time, there's usually a moment of silence. The island itself is tiny — you could walk around it in ten minutes — but the water surrounding it seems to stretch forever in every direction, flat and glittering and completely unridden.
There are no other kite schools here. No crowds. No jet skis. Just your group, your kites, and an enormous expanse of perfect flat water all to yourselves.
The Riding Conditions: Why Kiters Call It Magic
The conditions at Vella Island are what have earned it its legendary reputation in the global kite community. Here's what makes riding here so special:
Perfectly Flat Water
The lagoon around Vella Island is almost completely protected from chop and swell. The water surface is so flat that you can ride at speed without any of the jarring impact that ocean riding involves. This makes it ideal for:
- Freestyle and unhooked tricks — the flat surface absorbs landings cleanly
- Handle passes and rotations — consistent power, no surprises underfoot
- High-speed runs — nothing to interrupt your glide
- Foil boarding — the calm surface is a foiler's dream
Shallow Water, Everywhere
Even well away from the island, the lagoon rarely exceeds knee to waist depth. This is a huge confidence booster for riders who are still building their skills, and it means that even a hard crash results in a soft landing rather than a deep-water swim.
Consistent, Accelerated Wind
The island's position in the lagoon means it catches wind beautifully from multiple directions. During the main southwest season especially, the breeze here is steady, clean, and often stronger than at the mainland spots — exactly what you want for a full day of riding.
The Magic Island Downwinder: A Bucket-List Run
If the Vella Island session itself is the main course, the Magic Island downwinder is the dessert — and it is spectacular.
A downwinder is a kite run where you ride with the wind at your back, travelling in one direction across open water rather than riding back and forth in a small area. The Magic Island downwinder takes you on a long, exhilarating run across the lagoon, riding the wind from Vella Island back toward the Kalpitiya peninsula.
Here's what makes it unforgettable:
- Distance: A proper downwinder run covers several kilometres of open lagoon — more riding space than most kiters ever get in a single run
- Speed: With the wind behind you and flat water below, your speed builds in a way that just isn't possible on a standard beach session
- Freedom: There are no buoys, no boundaries, no crowded beach to dodge. Just open water in every direction
- The finish: A Surfpoint support boat follows you throughout and picks you up at the end — no walking, no exhausting upwind battle to get home
Even experienced kiters who have ridden all over the world describe the Magic Island downwinder as one of the most enjoyable single runs of their kite career. That's not a claim we make lightly.
Who Is the Vella Island Trip For?
The trip is best suited to intermediate and advanced riders who are comfortable riding independently and can handle open-water conditions. As a general guide:
- You should be able to ride consistently in both directions
- You should be comfortable riding away from a beach into open water
- Basic self-rescue skills are a strong advantage
Beginners who have completed their first few lessons are welcome to join the boat trip and explore the island — the lagoon around Vella is a beautiful place to practice basic riding in calm, shallow conditions under instructor supervision. We assess each guest individually before recommending the downwinder portion.
What to Bring on the Vella Island Trip
- High-SPF sunscreen — you're out on open water with no shade. Apply before you leave, and bring extra
- Rash guard or UV top — essential for a full day in the Sri Lankan sun
- Water and snacks — we recommend bringing a good supply; the island has no facilities
- Waterproof camera or GoPro — you will regret not having one
- Reef shoes — optional but useful for walking on the sandbar
- A sense of adventure — this is not a typical beach session
All kite gear is transported on the boat. Our team handles the launch and landing setup on the island so you can focus on riding from the moment you arrive.
Booking the Vella Island Trip
The Vella Island excursion runs on selected days during both wind seasons, subject to conditions and group availability. We keep group sizes small to preserve the experience — this is not a crowded day-tour operation.
To check availability and book your spot, get in touch with the Surfpoint team directly. We'll make sure the conditions are right and that you're set up for the best possible day on the water.
Some guests come to Kalpitiya for the kiting. Some come for the scenery. Everyone who does the Vella Island trip comes back for both.
