There is a specific kind of magic that happens when you stop looking at your upwind angle and start looking at the horizon. In Kalpitiya, that horizon is vast, shifting between the deep blue of the Indian Ocean and the emerald maze of the Puttalam Lagoon.

At Surfpoint Sri Lanka Kite Village, we have been sharing the "Kite Family" lifestyle since 2009. While many riders are content with the butter-flat waters directly in front of our resort, the true soul of a Sri Lankan kite adventure is found in a downwinder—a long-distance journey where the wind is your engine and the landscape is your reward.

The Vastness of the Puttalam Lagoon Archipelago

The Puttalam Lagoon is not just a body of water; it is a 160-square-kilometer wilderness. This massive estuary is a crucial wetland, home to thousands of migratory birds, including stunning flocks of pink flamingos that arrive during the winter months.

For the adventurous kiter, this lagoon offers an island-hopping safari through a maze of quiet islets and hidden gems. One of the most sought-after stops is Ippantivu Island, affectionately known by locals as "Mini Vella". This island features a protected, flat-water bay with stable offshore winds, providing a pristine playground far from any crowds. As you glide through these channels, you’ll pass dense mangrove forests that serve as vital fish nurseries and stabilize the coastline.

Strategic Downwinder Routes for Every Season

Kalpitiya’s unique geography ensures that no matter which way the monsoon blows, there is a world-class route waiting for you.

The Kappalady to Donkey Point Coastal Run (Summer/Yala Season)

During the Yala monsoon (May to September), powerful southwest winds of 18–28 knots create the perfect setup for a coastal cruise. Starting from the Kappalady Lagoon, you transition into the open ocean, tracking the coastline northward for a thrilling 35 to 45-minute journey.

On this route, you’ll ride long, clean ocean swells and rolling waves—some reaching 3 to 6 feet—before finishing at Donkey Point. This legendary wave spot is a favorite for those riding directional boards or looking to spice up their session with some forgiving reef breaks.

The Navy Point Glide (Winter/Maha Season)

When the Maha monsoon (December to March) brings its gentler 14–20 knot northeasterly breezes, the action moves to the northern tip of the peninsula. We begin with a 30-minute boat transfer to Navy Point, a blue-water sanctuary located at the very edge of the land.

From there, you’ll embark on a 1.5 to 2-hour downwind journey back toward the main lagoon. This route is a masterclass in variety, offering a mix of ultra-flat inner passages and light ocean chop, all under the warm winter sun.

Professional Safety Protocols and Logistical Support

At Surfpoint, we believe that an adventure is only as good as the safety net behind it. Downwinding in remote areas like the Puttalam Lagoon requires technical precision and expert oversight.

Dedicated Boat Rescues and RIB Support

Every downwind expedition we organize is supported by a dedicated rescue boat. We primarily utilize Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs), which are the most comfortable and capable vessels on the coast. These boats are equipped with:

  • Overhead shade to protect support teams and resting riders from the intense tropical sun.
  • Professional board racks and kite hangers to ensure your gear stays organized and damage-free during transitions.
  • Communication links between the boat and our beachfront base.

IKO-Certified Guidance

Safety is our priority. Our team of IKO-certified instructors monitors every session, ensuring that all riders maintain proper kite etiquette and safety zones—specifically a 50-meter buffer downwind and 30 meters upwind when performing maneuvers. If you drop your kite in a deep-water channel or find yourself overpowered, our boat crew is trained to assist you immediately, allowing you to push your limits with total peace of mind.

Seamless Logistics: From Launch to Lunch

We handle the heavy lifting so you can focus on the ride. A typical Surfpoint downwinder is a full-service experience:

  • Transport: We arrange 4x4 jeeps or boats to take you to the launch site.
  • Support: A safety boat and an experienced guide accompany the group on the water.
  • Return: Once you reach the destination—like Donkey Point—a pre-arranged tuk-tuk or jeep will be waiting to bring you back to the resort.
  • Recovery: The adventure ends at our beachfront restaurant, where the "kite stories" begin over a massive platter of fresh Sri Lankan seafood and cold drinks.
